Montgomery County, Pennsylvania: Magisterial District Courts
Summary offenses are Pennsylvania’s least serious offenses. And they are decided in the Montgomery County Magisterial District Courts.

Summary offenses are acts such as underage drinking of alcohol, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, harassment, first-offense shoplifting of items costing less than $150, and driving with a suspended license.

Judges who preside over Pennsylvania’s Magisterial District Courts can also perform marriages and administer oaths.

Montgomery County has 30 Magisterial District Courts located throughout the county. All criminal cases begin in these courts. Felony cases and misdemeanor cases start with preliminary arraignments. And the next step includes preliminary hearings. Felony and misdemeanor cases then move to the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas.

Facing a criminal or traffic offense charge in Montgomery County is a serious issue. You’ll need an experienced defense attorney to help with your case. The outcome of your case will depend on the circumstances. But a skilled attorney can build the best defense possible to help your case.

No offense is too small. Something as seemingly minor as a summary offense can have a negative impact on your life. Conviction of a summary offense can possibly lead to 90 days in jail and a $300 fine. And if you have a prior conviction, you could possibly receive 180 days in jail.

Attorney Representation when Appearing in Gilbertsville
You might think a summary offense is unimportant. And you might decide to plead guilty just to get it over with. The thought of putting the entire issue behind you is tempting. It might also lead you to believe you can easily represent yourself in court. But even if it’s a summary offense, the outcome will affect your future.

You could possibly face a jail sentence. That might cause you to lose your job, and become the holder of a criminal record. As you can see, a summary offense could have a drastic impact on your life. Why leave anything up to chance by representing yourself in court?

Receiving a positive outcome is more likely if you have an experienced criminal defense lawyer by your side. A good lawyer can defend you against the charges and advise you on the best course of action.
